British-made Hawks being readied for use in Aceh

11 May 2003

TAPOL, the Indonesia Human Rights Campaign, has today written to the British Government drawing its attention to reports in the Indonesian press about the intention to use British-supplied Hawk aircraft in the military operations which are due to commence in Aceh in the next couple of days.

In a letter to Mike O'Brien, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign office, TAPOL called on the government to make 'immediate representations to the Indonesian authorities about the intention to use British-made Hawk aircraft against the Acehnese people'.

Carmel Budiardjo of TAPOL also stated in the letter:

'From everything I have seen recently, I have the strong impression that the British Government supports the peace process worked out between the two sides in the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement of December and therefore opposes Jakarta’s intention to launch new military operations in Aceh. This leads us to believe that the Government should make it clear to Jakarta that military operations will solve nothing and call for these operations to be abandoned, while also insisting that British-supplied equipment should not be used in any role in Aceh.'

On 8 May, TAPOL along with Campaign Against Arms Trade wrote to the British Government to draw its attention to the TNI's intention to use UK-made Scorpion tanks in Aceh and called on the British Government to seek assurances from Jakarta that no equipment supplied by the UK would be used in Aceh.
